The South LA City shelter is a high volume shelter, receiving many owner turn ins and strays. The animals have very little time to find a home. If you are interested in adopting a shelter animal, do not wait!! The animal you see may not be there tomorrow. Call the shelter and give them the impound number of the animal you are interested in. Ask them to note your name, phone number and date you will come to adopt. BE SURE TO GET THE NAME OF THE PERSON YOU SPEAK WITH! Then get in your car and go save a precious life!

this litle girl sure is a cutie! white body with pretty markings of auburn and black and her head and tail and a few cute spots on her back. she has a darling, very kissable, light pink nose. she seems very sweet but so sad to be in a cage at the shelter. please come visit with her to see what a sweet girl she is.

now that it is kitten season, even young beautiful cats like this have a hard time finding a home. everyone seems to want the tiny kittens. no one stops to think that this girl was once a darling little kitten that everyone wanted, but the person who was responsible for her life and safety betrayed her and she may have to pay with her life. please save her precious life.

euthanized. rest in peace, sweet girl.

"Daryl and Patrice"

More Photos Available

Another pair of dogs dumped at the pound by the owner, due to "landlord" problems. Evidently, Daryl was involved in a dogfight in the kennel. He has some abrasions on his nose, but the vet notes on his kennel card indicate it's nothing serious. These dogs are very connected to each other. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that they will be adopted together, or even separately, for that matter. There are so many Staffs at the pound. And so few of them get out alive. Even a dog without any issues is not likely to get a home. I don't believe these boys have any personality issues. They seem to be pretty well-mannered. It's just a hopeless situation for these dogs.

I doubt this dog is a Shar Pei mix. He may more likely be Staff/Lab. But he does have the small, folded down ears of a Shar Pei. This dog may well be misunderstood. There are so many cautionary notations on his kennel card; yet when I spent some time with him today, he was sweet and gentle with me. If no one takes the time to reevaluate this dog, he will be dead within the next two days. And it will be a tragic mistake. Please ask to see him outside his kennel.

This beautiful young girl is mislabeled. She is more of a Labrador Retriever mix than an Am Staff. She has a long, slender muzzle, much more like a Lab. She has a gorgeous black coat, with white boots and an adorable white stripe down her face. And she is definitely not a large dog. Even worse, her kennel card notes that she is "fractious." Perhaps she was frightened, when she was first impounded. She certainly was not the least bit difficult with me. Today she even licked my hand.

Since she is now available and apparently no one at the pound has taken the time to reevaluate her, this cautionary note may prevent her from getting adopted. Please ask to see her out of her kennel. This may be her only opportunity to show her true temperament.

UPDATE 4/10: This sweet baby was reevaluated. Her kennel card no longer notes "fractious." She was probably just scared, when she first was impounded. Still, she needs to get out ASAP. She has been available for 1 week. That's a long time in a city pound. Can anyone save her life?

I really like this dog, but what's not to like? He is beautiful, adorable, and very sweet (he's also on the smaller side too, probably 35 lbs.). He's a little shy at first, but that is probably because there is a dog who is beating up on him in his kennel. When you walk up to the kennel, the dominant dog nips and growls at him so he can't get any attention. He wants to so badly though. He is really a sweet guy! Visit with him outside of his kennel so you can find out how wonderful he really is. This boy deserves to LIVE! Please save his life and give him the loving home he deserves!

Stunning boy with a magnificent jet black glossy coat. He's already neutered and microchipped. He is a little shy at first, but does come to the front of the cage. He isn't showing well, but I think there is a great dog in him, he's just too scared to show it.

Please visit with him outside of his kennel. He has no chance if no one comes for him soon. HE IS OUT OF TIME.

This is a nice boy! He is so friendly and outgoing. He is such a happy boy, despite his desperate condition. It is so sad that he doesn't realize his life will end if he doesn't get chosen. This guy will make such a good companion. He will be faithful, loyal and loving. Please visit with him yourself to see what a great dog he really is! But don't wait too long--he is out of time at the shetler!

This sweet girl's kennel card was pulled when I stopped by her kennel to take her picture. I went to the front desk to place an Adopter Alert on her, hoping I could network her and get someone to bail her tomorrow. The ACT at Receiving stated that the computer had this dog listed as "euthanized." I said that the dog was still in her kennel and very much alive and that I wanted to place an Adopter Alert on her. By the time I went back to her kennel to point her out to the ACT, she had been taken back to Medical and was already dead. In fact, the ACT checked the Medical Room and saw the dead dog's body in the freezer. If I had been at the front desk two minutes earlier, she would still be alive and available for rescue. And why did this dog have to be put down on a Friday afternoon, with the whole weekend ahead of her? First, I was told that any dog with any symptom of distemper was being destroyed, due to the distemper outbreak. But she looked asymptomatic to me. You can see in her picture. No ocular/nasal discharge. Then it was explained that she was aggressive. But she was not aggressive to me. She licked my hand! Well, I was told she was dog-aggressive. So what? She could be an only dog! This was a 1-year old baby!!

WAS URGENT. REST IN PEACE. YOU DESERVED MORE.

Another owner-dumped Staff. And another case of an owner's neglect. Although this dog is just slightly over 1 year old, her kennel card notes "thinning hair." This is perhaps an indication of either poor diet, undue stress or an unsanitary environment. This girl's life is going to be a short one, unless she is one of the few dogs that is rescued or adopted.

"Lucky (another "lucky" one)"

AVAILABLE NOW! URGENT!!

Lucky was dumped at the pound today, ticks and all. His owner claimed he is "destructive." I believe I've already covered this excuse in other posts. How many dogs have to pay with their lives for their owner's stupidity?

This is such a good-natured boy. I hate to say this, but he reminds me of the recently euthanized "Mickey," also a young Rottweiler mix, who had a gorgeous red/brown coat. Lucky is just as nice a dog as Mickey was. Lucky is SO SWEET! I hope his life isn't cut short, the way Mickey's was.

Please save Lucky. Let him experience a life with people who actually CARE about him. He is so worth it.

AVAILABLE NOW!

This pup is very cute! The picture does not do her justice! Unfortunatly for her, she is in a kennel with a "bully" dog. It is difficult for her to come to the front of the kennel without getting picked on. This means she isn't showing too well. People aren't able to visit with her and see how nice she is in her kennel. Please visit with her outside of her kennel so you can see how incredibly SWEET AND LOVING she is! This girl is a gem! And extra cute and friendly! Her life is in danger! Please save her.

POSSIBLE OWNER NEVER REDEEMED DOG.

This gorgeous black and white Staffie boy was impounded 2/6 as a stray, with a Possible Owner. Unfortunately, he was in the last row of kennels. This is the worst section of the general kennels. These dogs are mainly overlooked. To make matters worse, he was under medication. Between the Medical Card and his placement in the general kennels, he did not have too much of a chance. I do not know if his person attempted to bail him out. I do know that frequently the bail-out (on an animal held for well over a month) may be exorbitant. In some cases, owners may be unable to afford to redeem their animal.

At some point, this dog became available for adoption. Unfortunately for him, in the city pounds Staffs have a particularly difficult time getting out alive.
